RYA Powerboat Level 1 & 2 (Youth)

Level 1

This is a one-day course designed for complete beginners to the Powerboating world.

It is an introduction to boating techniques for everyday boat handling and the use of safety equipment. In the Bristol Harbour or Portishead Marina, you will get to grips with manoeuvring a powerboat up to 10 meters in the daylight. Upon completion of the course, you will be able to assist onboard a powerboat and drive under supervision.

Level 2

Cost: £325

Harbour Only Cost: £295

The perfect 2-day course for young adults to gain experience in Powerboating!

This is 2 day course, designed for young adults between the ages of 12-16 years old, who wish to learn how to safely and confidently drive a powerboat in the Bristol Historic floating harbour or the vibrant marina at Portishead. The course begins by covering the theory on board a powerboat, including preparation of the rib and crew and safety on board. We then head out onto the water, where the students will practice slow-speed manoeuvring.

This gives the students the opportunity to practice mooring at the many pontoons and landings. The second day expands on their manoeuvring skills and building confidence with safety training including “Man Overboard Drills” using a dummy. By the end of the course, candidates will be presented with an RYA Level 2 Powerboat certificate, which will enable them to drive any motor-driven vessel up to 10 meters in length, in daylight conditions.

Course Locations

Bristol Harbour

Bristol’s historic floating harbour is perfect for slow-speed manoeuvring, this gives powerboat drivers the opportunity to drive into the centre of Bristol by boat and practice mooring at the many pontoons and landings around the harbour (it is also good for sightseeing locations such as the SS Great Britain and the M-shed).

If you choose to do your Bristol RYA Powerboat Level 2 course with the channel experience, we lock out of Cumberland Basin and Entrance Lock onto the River Avon and with a quick 4-mile run down the river to the Bristol Channel.

Portishead Marina

Portishead is a vibrant marina with slow-speed manoeuvring, allowing powerboat drivers the opportunity to view the marina via boat and practice their mooring at the many pontoons and landings around the marina (it is also good for gaining further understanding of the different types of boats currently on the water).

For the coastal section of the RYA Powerboat Level 2, we lock out of Portishead Marina and straight onto the Bristol Channel. This provides a great experience as many boat users will not have gone through the process of traveling through a lock before.
