Student Notice: It is recommended that you bring your own lifejacket and wet weather clothing (Jacket and trousers) for use during the pool session, to familiarise yourself with your safety equipment. If you are unable to provide your own, please let us know before the course start date.   


 

Course Information

 

The RYA Sea Survival course is good for leisure sailors and power boaters as well. This 1-day Sea Survival Course will prepare students for all eventualities at sea and is vital for yachtsmen, crews, skippers, and power boaters of all types. This RYA training course concentrates on sea survival for professional crews, commercial operators, and offshore race crews. The RYA Sea Survival Course covers essential survival techniques including what to do if the worst happens and you have to abandon your boat or ship. RYA Sea Survival is also day 1 of the 2-day ISAF Offshore Safety Crew Course, which is required for crews racing offshore in ISAF races.

The course includes training that equips the students with practical survival techniques and is delivered in both the classroom, outside, and the water (swimming pool).  The Bristol Maritime Academy makes the course as practical as possible with the use of life rafts and distress flares.   

People wishing to commercially endorse the following courses also need to take the RYA Sea Survival course:

  • RYA Yachtmaster
  • RYA Advanced Powerboat Certificate

Assumed Pre-Course Ability: None, Beginner

Ability after the course: After finishing the RYA Sea Survival course the candidates will have an understanding of how to use the correct equipment and help preserve in the eventuality of an emergency at sea

Course content: Use and launching of life rafts, helicopter rescue, cold water immersion, using distress flares, life jacket,s and safety equipment use
